Early Career
Before venturing into politics, Diri worked as a teacher in several government schools in rural areas of the old Rivers State, imparting knowledge and contributing to the educational development of the region.
Political Career
Douye Diri’s political career began with his engagement in the Ijaw National Congress (INC), a key socio-political organization dedicated to representing the interests of the Ijaw people. His leadership abilities and commitment to the cause earned him the position of the first National Organizing Secretary of the INC, where he played a crucial role in mobilizing support, coordinating activities, and advocating for the rights and development of the Ijaw ethnic group.
Recognized for his dedication to youth empowerment and regional development, Diri was later appointed as the Executive Secretary of the Centre for Youth Development during the administration of Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, the first elected Governor of Bayelsa State. In this capacity, he worked towards implementing policies and programs to enhance opportunities for young people, foster economic growth, and address social challenges within the state. Following the court’s decision, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was directed to issue Diri a Certificate of Return, officially recognizing him as the Governor-elect of Bayelsa State. In adherence to the ruling, he was sworn into office on February 14, 2020, assuming the state’s governance and leadership responsibilities.
